    Every answer shows its work

    A bare answer doesn't help when the point is to learn (or check) the method. This calculator writes out each move it makes — finding the common denominator, flipping the divisor, multiplying across, dividing out the common factor — in the same order you'd do it on paper. If your homework answer differs, the step where the lists diverge is where the mistake lives.

    The three rules that cover everything

    Mixed numbers aren't a fourth case: convert them to improper fractions first (whole × denominator + numerator), apply one of the three rules, and convert back at the end. That's exactly what the steps above show.

    Simplifying: one divisor, both sides

    A fraction is in lowest terms when the top and bottom share no factor but 1. To get there in one move, divide both by their greatest common factor — for 12/18 that's 6, giving 2/3. Dividing by any smaller shared factor also works, it just takes more rounds. Every result on this page is simplified automatically, and the step list tells you which divisor it used.

    FAQ

    Adding with different denominators?

    Rewrite over the least common denominator, add the numerators, simplify: 1/2 + 1/3 → 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

    Multiplying fractions?

    Straight across, then simplify — mixed numbers become improper fractions first.

    Dividing fractions?

    Keep, change, flip: 1/2 ÷ 3/4 = 1/2 × 4/3 = 2/3.

    Simplifying?

    Divide top and bottom by their greatest common factor; done when that factor is 1.

    Improper vs mixed?

    7/4 and 1 3/4 are the same value — divide 7 by 4 to get 1 remainder 3.
