The math, in one line
Distance = steps × step length. Everything else is estimating that step length well. This calculator uses the widely used walking estimate — height × 0.415 for men, height × 0.413 for women — and lets you override it with a measured value, which always wins. It's an estimate for planning and tracking, not a medical measurement.
Why "2,000 steps per mile" is only half true
The old rule of thumb assumes a 31.7-inch step, which fits tall walkers. At an average 5'6" height the walking step is about 27.4 inches, which works out to roughly 2,300 steps per mile — and a 5-foot walker needs closer to 2,550. That spread is why fitness trackers that use one fixed number drift from reality, and why this calculator asks for your height.
Measure your real step length in 60 seconds
- 1. Mark a start line and walk 10 normal steps — normal pace, don't stretch.
- 2. Measure the distance from the line to your final toe position.
- 3. Divide by 10 and enter the result in the custom field above. Done — that number beats any formula.
One caveat: running steps are much longer than walking steps and change with pace, so measure separately for runs and swap the custom value.
FAQ
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4.3 miles (7 km) at average height — between 4 and 5 miles for most adults.
How many steps in a mile?
Usually 2,000–2,500 walking; about 2,300 at average height.
Is 2,000 steps a mile?
Only around 6'4" tall; a rule of thumb, not an exact figure.
Best way to get an accurate number?
Measure your own step length (10-step method above) and use the custom field.
Walking vs running?
Running steps are longer and pace-dependent — this tool models walking by default.
